How to Target Multiple Keywords with One Page - Next Level

Image
Welcome to our newest installment of our educational Next Level series! In our last episode, Jo Cameron taught you how to whip up  intelligent SEO reports  for your clients to deliver impressive, actionable insights. Today, our friendly neighborhood Training Program Manager, Brian Childs, is here to show you an easy workflow for targeting multiple keywords with a single page. Read on and level up! For those who have taken any of the  Moz Training Bootcamps , you'll know that we approach keyword research with the goal of identifying concepts rather than individual keywords. A common term for this in SEO is “niche keywords.” I think of a “niche” as a set of related words or concepts that are essentially variants of the same query. Example: Let’s pretend my broad subject is:  Why are cats jerks? Some niche topics within this subject are: Why does my cat keep knocking things off the counter? Why does my cat destroy my furniture? Why did I agree to get t...

How to Build SEO Strategies Effectively (and Make Them Last)

"Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." I read  The Art of War  in college, written by the Chinese general Sun Tzu (author of the quote above). While his actual existence is debated, his work is often considered as brilliant military strategy and philosophy. Thus,  The Art of War  is often co-opted into business for obvious reasons. Source These definitions vary slightly, but the essence is the same. A strategy is not constrained by size or application but promoted by planning and effectiveness. L...

Marketers: This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Image
The next evolution of marketing is upon us. The sharp uptake in consumer use of messaging apps, the shift in content consumption from text to video and audio, and the finally consumer-ready advancements in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and voice recognition all signal that marketers and consumers alike are in radically new times. Everytime consumer behavior evolves, marketers have new opportunities that were never before available. I was talking to a colleague the other day about these changes, and she noted how endlessly marketing channels shift. "There aren’t many other fields where the game reinvents itself so often," she said. "That’s because we fuck everything up," I told her. Let me explain. Scorched Earth Marketing AKA "Why We Can’t Have Nice Things" There is a desperation at play in most marketing organizations. A low grade panic to solve for short-term needs  --  the lead goal that month, for example, or a choice media...

The Wonderful World of SEO Meta Tags [Refreshed for 2017]

Image
Meta tags represent the beginning of most SEO training, for better or for worse. I contemplated exactly how to introduce this topic because we always hear about the bad side of meta tags — namely, the keywords meta tag. One of the first things dissected in any site review is the misuse of meta tags, mainly because they're at the top of every page in the header and are therefore the first thing seen. But we don't want to get too negative; meta tags are some of the best tools in a search marketer's repertoire. There are meta tags beyond just  description  and  keywords , though those two are picked on the most. I've broken down the most-used (in my experience) by the good, the bad, and the indifferent. You'll notice that the list gets longer as we get to the bad ones. I didn't get to cover all of the meta tags possible to add, but there's a comprehensive  meta tag resource  you should check out if you're interested in everything that's out there....
